The 17th annual Black Hat USA conference brought together over 9,000 cyber security professionals to discuss the sudden rise of mobile threats and data breach vulnerabilities. We attended and exhibited at the security conference, demoing to booth visitors the exciting improvements we've made to Gears and Metascan Online.

Black Hat USA 2014 Recap

During the conference, we met with leading industry analysts to discuss the current trends at this year's conference, which focused primarily on defending against security network vulnerabilities. Keynote speaker Dan Geer, CIA Security Chief, discussed how the United States should look into purchasing all vulnerabilities available on the hacker 'black market' to eliminate the advantage cyber-attackers have when they utilize these exploits in their attacks.

In addition to Dan Geer's speech, another presentation by security professionals, Karsten Nohl and Jakob Lell, examined the recent 'BadUSB' security flaw and the problem the threat poses for traditional security solutions. Even though the recent discovery of 'BadUSB' is currently in proof-of-concept, it presents a major security risk for organizations that rely heavily on portable devices. We discussed on our blog how transferring approved and processed files onto trusted media devices can be one of the techniques used to detect and prevent advanced threats from infiltrating an organization's security network.

Hundreds of conference attendees stopped by our booth to learn about our free Gears tool, which provides home users and IT professionals the ability to quickly determine whether their device is compromised and greater visibility into the status of installed security applications. In addition, we also demoed the latest security feature for Metascan Online, IP reputation scanning. The new addition allows users to scan an unfamiliar IP address for malicious behavior against 15 reputation sources.

Wounded Warrior Project

"Black Hat has always been one of our favorite conferences to attend," said Tom Mullen, Vice President of Business Development at OPSWAT. "With this year's focus on mobile threats, it was great meeting conferences attendees and demoing the advanced threat detection capabilities Gears provides for remote devices."

Thanks to all our booth visitors, we will be donating $502 to the Wounded Warrior Project! As a conference tradition we donate $1 for every booth visitor. We look forward to future contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides programs and services to members of the military that suffered injuries during combat.
