Scan Larger Files with Metascan Online

We are excited to announce several recent enhancements to our Metascan Online service.

Enhanced scanning of APKs and XPIs

We now scan Android App Package files (APKs) and Firefox extension packages (XPIs) as both standalone files as well as archives, which means that threats will be detected whether malware engines have detection for the APK or XPI file itself or for files within the app. This will greatly increase the detection of malware spread through Android app packages and Firefox extensions because we see that in many circumstances threats are only detected by one of these methods.

Here is an example of varying scan results between scanning an APK file, and scanning the files included in the APK.

This XPI file was detected as a threat by only a few anti-malware engines, but more scan engines detected the files within the XPI as threats.

Higher file size limits for scanning

We have also increased the maximum size for files scanned with Metascan Online. Now files up to 140 MB in size can be scanned either through the web interface or through the REST API, which includes the Metascan Online apps developed by our community. If you are using the Metascan Online Chrome extension or the recently developed plugin for Firefox, you will soon also be able to scan larger files.

New scan engines added

We have added two new anti-malware engines to Metascan Online, Preventon and XVirus by MySecurityWin, bringing the total number of engines to 43! We have integrations with additional engines in the works, and you can visit Metascan Online to see the full list of available scan engines.

Check out the enhancements by uploading files on Metascan Online, and let us know what you think!
