How One of The Largest Banks in Taiwan Uses OPSWAT MetaDefender Email Security to Close Security Gaps
Following the deployment of this OPSWAT technology, there was a 95% reduction in malware attacks entering this major financial institution’s networks

About the Company: Headquartered in Taipei, this organization is one of the largest banking institutions in Taiwan with 108 branches (including a foreign department) in Taiwan and 39 units overseas (excluding their offshore banking branch).
The bank operates both domestically and internationally offering a wide range of financial services including retail, corporate, and international banking.
What's the Story?: Before deploying OPSWAT’s MetaDefender Email Security solution, the bank was under a constant threat of malware compromising their systems, along with social engineering attempts through phishing attacks that targeted employees.
To address this, the bank upgraded their email security with MetaDefender Email Security featuring Deep CDR (Content Disarm and Reconstruction) that prevents all file-based exploits including advanced evasive malware, zero-day attacks, and APTs (Advanced Persistent Threats)—from entering their network.
Due to the nature of the business, the name of the organization featured in this story has been kept anonymous in order to protect the integrity of their work.
Of all business sectors, financial institutions account for the highest percentage of phishing attacks at 27% according to a report from Station X. As malware can also bypass conventional gateway security, measures must be taken to stop network breaches via employee engagement with malicious emails and attachments.
The email security of one of the largest banks in Taiwan was recently challenged by this very danger. Despite implementing email filtering gateways, they found that their security measures were easily bypassed, allowing malware to infiltrate their system undetected. OPSWAT was contacted specifically to solve this problem.
Solving Email Security at Scale
With 108 branches in Taiwan, including a foreign department, and 39 units overseas, the bank ranks among Taiwan's top five financial institutions. The sheer volume of emails—exceeding 6 million daily for its 6000+ employees—heightened their challenge of comprehensive malware detection.
The bank faced increasing malware attacks, which consumed valuable investigative resources to determine what happened. Compliance with expanding government regulations was also a struggle. And the single search engine they had deployed for malware detection proved inadequate, especially against zero-day threats. Ultimately, the bank needed an email security solution that would reduce phishing threats to the greatest degree possible.
Recognizing the need for external expertise, the bank turned to Lambert Lin, an information security consultant. Lin recommended implementing MetaDefender Email Security, with Deep CDR against file-based exploits and Multiscanning (with multiple anti-malware engines) against malware.
OPSWAT Delivered a 95% Reduction in Malware Attacks
The value of MetaDefender Email Security is that it can truly transform an organization’s cybersecurity posture. Before the bank deployed this solution, they were constantly having to react to potential threats; chasing breach detection and analysis only after they had happened.
OPSWAT Email Security provides the bank with multiple layers of email protection that include:
Zero-day attack protection that relies on prevention rather than detection.
Employee email threat engagement reduction which uncovers potential phishing attacks at multiple stages.
Malware detection that provides a 99.20% detection rate.
Ensures compliance with PCI and other regulations protecting PII data within companies.
Six months after deployment, malware attacks at the bank were reduced by 95% with incidents declining from 100 per month to only five per month. The bank was so pleased with the results that they plan to extend OPSWAT cybersecurity solutions across their entire network.
Because we deployed Deep CDR into the email channel, they [the bank] are very confident to say that there is almost a 95% reduction of malware from the email channel.

Solving the Email Dilemma with Advanced Technology
Detects zero-day exploits and neutralizes them. File content is sanitized to make them safe for use and includes support for over 150 file types, including PDFs, archives, and file formats that support archives. Deep CDR recently achieved a 100% Protection and Accuracy Score from SE Labs.
Multiscanning
Detects malware, including zero-day, by combining over 30 anti-malware engines that achieve a detection rate greater than 99.20%.
Real-Time Anti-Phishing
Prevents social engineering and credential harvesting attempts that come through phishing attacks. Multiple detection technologies are used, including advanced heuristics and machine learning.
Proactive Data Loss Prevention
Protects against data leakage using redaction, preventing sensitive and regulated data from leaving or entering the organization’s systems by content-checking files and emails before they are transferred. Supports over 110+ file types, including Microsoft Office, PDF, CSV, HTML and image files.
With MetaDefender Email Security’s added defense layers protecting their entire organization, the bank now plays offense, proactively dealing with potential breaches before they happen; saving time, money, and valuable human resources.
