Access Older Versions of the Gears Client

The latest Gears release includes access to older versions of the Gears client, significant performance improvements and minor bug fixes.

Gears Client Archive

When we recently added the ability to disable auto-updates, we identified the need to create a place for users to access older versions of the Gears client. We’ve since added an archive on my.opswat.com for this purpose. Simply log in to my.opswat.com and then go to the Downloads page and under the Gears section select 'Gears Client Archive'. Please note that only versions supporting the disable auto-update feature will be archived. We will also begin posting detailed release notes with the clients to help users navigate the archive.

Performance Upgrades

As the Gears community gets larger every day, we’ve continued to improve the maintenance of our servers. We currently host servers in multiple facilities across America, Europe and Asia. Our American servers have been approaching their limits, so we went under the hood over the past few weeks and made significant performance improvements. We’re excited to announce that we’ve doubled the amount of servers in the U.S. and configured them for enhanced load balancing and failover. These new servers have more memory, newer processors, and SSD storage. In addition to these performance gains, the Gears cloud will be even more reliable. For future Gears releases, we’re working on another round of improvements including an interactive status page.

Additional Download Options

After testing and collecting community feedback, we’ve decided that the primary version of the Gears for Guest Devices client for Windows will require local user elevated privileges. The non-admin version will continue to be available, but should not be used if malware deep-scanning or encryption detection is required for your security policy as these two features have limited support in the non-admin version.

Cloud API Enhancements

We’ve added a few new Cloud APIs to further simplify integration with many different NAC solutions. If you have or are considering a secure access solution that would benefit from Gears integration, let us know by contacting us on Twitter @OPSWAT.

Product Support

The OESIS Framework has added detection of new applications, including three antivirus, one each antiphishing, anti-spyware, patch management, backup, firewall and encryption products. In addition to these nine new detections, over 80 methods have been added or enhanced. These methods are what power Gears' ability to auto-remediate endpoints, including enabling antivirus real time protection, uninstalling P2P software, etc.

Bug Fixes

In the latest Gears release, we also fixed issues where:

  • License key entered in "Manage my PC" tab was not retained after Gears exits (Windows, Persistent)
  • Gears UI did not show after first time installation even when the Cloud policy for show UI was enabled (Windows, Persistent)
  • If malware scan failed, remediation page did not popup automatically even if the setting was turned on (Windows, On Demand)
  • Some desktop devices were incorrectly displayed as servers in Gears cloud (Windows, On Demand)
