For years it has been rumored that foreign adversaries already infiltrated important critical infrastructure facilities and that attacks (such as the Ukraine electric utility in 2017 with Petya) were just small demonstrations of what could be done. After years of warnings and policy edits relating to the vulnerability of critical infrastructure systems (CIS) in the US and Western world, we are beginning to see new modes of cyberattacks such as ransomware pervade these societally important facilities. And, with the Colonial Pipeline attack earlier this year, it appears that for-profit criminals are getting into the game as well now.
The problem is only going to get worse, and the number of companies targeted by attackers will grow in scope and diversity. We expect that in addition to nuclear facilities, electric and water utilities, transportation companies, energy (oil & gas), communications and chemicals industries will begin being targeted in an increasing number over the coming year.
