A new version of Gears is now available and the update includes several new features such as the Gears client for guest devices, brand new APIs, and minor bug fixes.

The latest Gears release includes the beta version of the Gears client for guest devices. The new feature allows administrators to run Gears client on all of the devices within their security infrastructure, including devices only requiring temporary access. The client will run on the endpoint, quickly gather information about the device and report the information to the Gears cloud. Due to the small memory size (~2.9 megabytes), the program can be easily and thoroughly removed through deletion by the end user. The new feature is ideal for administrators looking to ensure guest devices attempting to access their network are compliant with existing security policies.

We’ve also added a new section on the left side navigation menu within the Gears cloud. The Devices section now has Managed and Guest devices, allowing administrators to switch between these two groups of devices within the network. Managed devices include the devices that are under management by the network administrators, while the guest devices will contain devices only requiring temporary access to the network. Guest devices will continue to be listed in the Gears cloud navigation menu for the length of your account's data retention period, which is 30 days for free accounts and customizable for paid accounts.

We’ve also been hard at work improving and enhancing our APIs to support the developer community. We have added two new APIs to help administrators remove endpoint devices from their account, either individually or all at once. In addition to the new APIs, we’ve also expanded the capabilities of some of the existing APIs including a new “opt” parameter in the Devices API and a remediation link in the Policy Check API.

Finally, the latest Gears release includes support for new product releases from our partners; including McAfee, Microsoft, Baidu, OpenVPN, as well as Firefox 30.x for OSX devices. A complete list of support applications is available here.
