Product Overview

OPSWAT MetaDefender Email Security ensures secure and continuous email communication for business and critical infrastructures by reducing cybersecurity risks. The OPSWAT Email Security solution features unique capabilities – including advanced threat detection and decreased outbreak detection time – that move email protection to a higher level of effectiveness. The current release includes new capabilities to simplify IT security operations management.

Release Highlights

This release offers enhanced Malware Outbreak Prevention for email attachments with the deeper integration of MetaDefender Managed File Transfer. The new disclaimer style makes our product more appealing, while the Secure URL Redirection feature has been improved. For simplified operation, we have improved the email alerting feature and upgraded the 3rd party components.

Better MetaDefender Managed File Transfer integration

We have implemented deeper integration with MetaDefender Managed File Transfer in order to provide a better end-user experience. Based on our learnings and market trends, we have discovered that using MD Vault with email security is a great way to prevent malware outbreaks. MD Vault has many outstanding functionalities, but outbreak detection is a very useful feature for email attachments.

New Impersonation Options

Our email gateway solution ensures that attachments can be uploaded to the intended recipients, which will eventually be delivered to their own vault account. However, if the user does not have an MD Vault account, attachments were uploaded to the default account, which causes additional operational tasks for administrators. With this integration, we now offer options: for example, if the user does not have an account in MD Vault, you can skip uploading an attachment or grant temporary account access to the attachments

Single Link Access to Attachments

Perhaps our most valuable improvement from a user experience perspective is the ability to provide a single link that takes the user directly to the folder where the uploaded attachment is located. This is cleaner than directing to the default folder.

Organize Uploaded Attachments into Subfolders

This option within the MD vault has become more structured. A user can upload many types of attachments to the vault, such as sanitized or blocked attachments, and MetaDefender Email Security can automatically create subfolders in the MD vault so that these different types of attachments are sorted accordingly.

Email Alert

If the vault does not respond or runs in time out, and the MetaDefender Email Gateway fails to upload the attachment, an alert can be sent to notify the administrator that the file has not been uploaded.

New Dashboard Widget

This brand-new dashboard widget allows admins to check what type of attachments have been uploaded.

New Disclaimer Design

Along with that, we have made our product more appealing. We have reworded the text of the disclaimer and created a new disclaimer design. It looks a bit nicer and less intrusive than before. We also have a new way to better group the disclaimer making it shorter and simpler. Branding has been removed to reveal a cleaner look.

Safe URL Redirection improvements

Dynamic phishing protection / safe URL redirection: Safe URL redirection allows you to redirect the user to MD Cloud to check the URL reputation in the email. In this release, we have further enhanced this feature. We have improved the detection of "mailto addresses", which are now not redirected for reputation checking. Another improvement is that if the URL is prefixed with a secure URL link, it will not be modified again.

Improved Email Alerts

We improved this feature to translate email alerts using XSLT. (Extensible stylesheet language transformations is a language for transforming XML documents into other XML documents.)

We also improved the ability to provide more information in the alert for a particular email, as well as providing a link to the email affected. This way, when the administrator receives a notification that an email has failed, he/she simply needs to click on the link, which will redirect to that email via the admin UI.

3rd Party Components Upgrades

It is always important to keep components up to date. Here is the list of the latest updates:

  • Qt upgraded to 6.2.4LTS
  • OpenSSL upgraded to 1.1.1n
  • Nginx upgraded to 1.21.6

Bug Fixes

Here is a list of the main bug fixes that have been resolved in this release:

  • Fixed a user authentication issue that caused problems when a user moved to a different location in Active Directory
  • The hash lookup function is a very useful procedure for email security, which could accelerate the email analysis processes. However, we considered it necessary to extend the types of results received from the core with “failed, not scanned, canceled, and in progress” options.
  • The cross IP session issue has now been resolved
