On February 1, 2023, Cyren announced financial challenges. In light of this announcement and our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible solutions for uninterrupted security, we have been closely monitoring the situation. On March 13, 2023, OK, an Icelandic IT company, disclosed an agreement to acquire all operational assets of Cyren's anti-malware business. Varist, a new OK subsidiary co-owned with former Cyren employees, will continue to offer and develop anti-malware products.

At OPSWAT, we place the highest value on ensuring customer safety and satisfaction. Our top priority is to facilitate a seamless transition as Varist incorporates Cyren's technologies into their product range. To achieve this, our team has worked closely with Varist throughout the integration process.

What will Change?

To ensure that our multiscanning technology is up to date with the appropriate vendor names, we will be updating Cyren to Varist in MetaDefender, effective May 24, 2023.

This update will affect MetaDefender Cloud, as well as any Windows or Linux versions of the MetaDefender suite that include the Cyren engine (Windows packages 12 engines and above, Linux package 10 engines). These include MetaDefender Core, MetaDefender ICAP Server, MetaDefender Email Security, MetaDefender Core AMI, MetaDefender Storage Security, and MetaDefender Kiosk.

The name update will affect the following areas:

  • Module page
  • Scan results page
  • REST API results
  • Log content

What will Stay the Same?

The engine ID data expressed in JSON will remain the same.

For example:

Old

opswat metadefender cyren engine ID JSON

New

opswat metadefender Varist engine ID JSON

How to Manage Custom Integrations

Note: For those without custom integrations, no further action is required.

If custom integrations are in place (e.g., scraped logs with engine names or hard-coded engine names within the REST API of MetaDefender Core), please follow these steps:

  1. Prepare to change the hard-coded strings
  2. Pin the engines 1-2 days in advance
    Note
: Pinning engines will avoid them being overwritten when you allow automatic product updates.
  3. After May 24, 2023, change your hard-coded strings and unpin the engines
  4. Check to make sure everything works as expected
