Virtual Deployment Setup Guide
We recommend using either VMware ESXi or VMware Workstation as your virtual machine monitoring solution. Other virtual machine monitoring software is untested. For the purposes of this guide, we will be using VMware ESXi as our example.
Upload ISO to datastore
- Browse the datastore where you intend to store the ISO and upload the ISO. The upload may take several minutes.
Select a name and guest OS
- Click "Create/Register VM" near the top of the screen and select “Create a new virtual machine”.
- Enter a name for the virtual machine. Keep in mind that virtual machine names must be unique within each ESXi instance.
- "Compatibility", select "ESXi 8 or current virtual machine".
- "Guest OS Family" should be set to "Linux".
- "Guest OS Version" should be set to "Oracle Linux 8 (64-bit)".
Select storage
- Select the datastore that will be used for this installation. In this example, there is only one option, but there may be multiple datastores to select from.
Customize settings
Minimum recommended resource provisioning for both Manager and Collector devices are as follows:
- "Disk Provisioning" under "Hard disk" should be set to "Thick provisioned, eagerly zeroed"
- "SCSI Controller" should be set to "VMware Paravirtual"
- If installing a virtual InQuest Collector, click "Add network adapter". The first network adapter will be used as the management interface and should be attached to the same network as the manager. The second network adapter will be used as the listening interface and should be set to the network containing the network traffic intended to be monitored. "Connect at power on" option should be enabled. "Adapter Type" should be set to "VMXNET 3". "Mac Address" should be set to "Automatic".
- "CD/DVD Drive" should be set to "Datastore ISO file". Browse the datastore and select the ISO. The "Connect at power on" should be enabled and "Virtual node device" should be set to "SATA Controller 0" and "SATA 0:0"
- "Video Card" should be set to use the "Auto-detect settings".
Confirm settings
Review your settings before building the virtual machine.
It may take several minutes for the virtual machine to be built. Once the virtual machine is available for use, follow either the MetaDefender NDR Manager Appliance Installation or MetaDefender NDR Collector Appliance Installation to complete the installation process.
