Metascan®

Use Cases

With fully customizable packages, Metascan can be adapted to suit an extensive range of performance and security needs. The following examples show a few possible uses for Metascan implementations:

  • Malware analysts interested in researching threats in binaries: Metascan quickly multi-scans files and archives using multiple anti-malware engines and returns detailed results from up to 30 engines
  • Multi-scanning suspicious files, such as in our Metascan Online demo
  • IT Managers looking to control data flow to and from the organization: Create a data leak prevention system with Metascan or use our MetaDefender for Media solution
  • Software vendors wanting to analyze their binaries: Metascan can be used to monitor the results from many antivirus engines over time to verify that a product is not incorrectly detected as a threat or does not inadvertently contain a threat
  • Risk management: Compare results from many antivirus engines to analyze the risks associated with using a particular solution in your organization.
  • Enhancing endpoint security: Our MD4SA tool is one possible implementation of Metascan for scanning endpoints’ running processes.
  • File upload servers: Establish control over data flow by scanning all files uploaded to a server

How Customers are using Metascan

Many of our customers use Metascan to implement file scanning solutions for their organization. Companies with files entering their network want to ensure that those files are not infected before they are allowed into the network, and Metascan is the ideal solution to manage the flow of files, both into and out of the network.

One common solution: Employees upload their files to a database, which communicates with a Metascan server. Each file from the database is sent to Metascan to be scanned and labeled as clean or suspicious. Metascan can then be configured to pass all clean files to a location inside the network, where employees can access and retrieve them.

A second scenario: A business service that accepts files such as resumes and photos from users can implement Metascan to verify that files do not contain threats before moving them to a permanent location.

These two scenarios can be revised to fit all types of organizations. To add control of data flow out of the organization, for example, a custom engine for data loss prevention can be integrated to Metascan. Additional configurations such as scanning only particular file types or sizes, sending infected files to a separate location, or converting files to a specific format are easy to implement.
